Second Grade - Science
The McRuffy Science series teaches life science, earth science, physical science, and scientific inquiry in an engaging approach that is very activity oriented. Students think and learn like scientists through the many hands-on activities and demonstrations.
The program is designed to teach science for a full year per grade level. Two lessons a week are taught for 33 weeks. Other daily activities are also suggested such as weather monitoring.
The second grade curriculum reviews and expands upon the concepts presented in kindergarten and first grade and introduces some new ones. A look at several state standards will reveal great similarities in requirements and expectations for science concepts in the primary grade levels.
Students grow and change in their ability to understand scientific concepts. The spiraling nature of the instruction allows students to expand upon previous learning. We have endeavored to add new information, activities, and experiments to increase understanding when concepts were originally presented in other levels.
The second grade also features several lessons that emphasize content reading skills. These are the skills that are useful in reading to learn (versus learning to read). The lessons and specific techniques used are noted in the lesson plans. These skills can be transferred to other subjects. They are written in such a way as to teach the teacher new instructional techniques.
