  • Language and Reading Workbook
  • Spelling and Phonics Workbook
  • Writing Skills Workbook
  • Reading Book Set
  • Resource Pack

The Third Grade SE Language Arts program includes a review of phonics with application to more complex words. The language program develops vocabulary, grammar, semantics, creative writing, understanding of story structure, sentence structure, and many other concepts.

The SE Teacher's Manuals include daily lesson plans and reference material, making it ideal for home school programs and classroom phonics. The teacher’s Manual lightens the load for lesson prep. Lesson objectives are clearly stated at the beginning of the lesson, so you know what is being taught at a glance. The Preparation section lists materials used in the lesson. In most lessons, no materials preparation is needed. The teaching section provides easy-to-follow teaching content with light scripting.

Teacher's Manual Part 1 covers lessons 1 to 80.
Teacher's Manual Part 2 covers lessons 81 to 160.

The Spelling and Phonics Workbook (SAP) lessons are arranged in weeks. There are four pages of workbook activities per week. The fifth day of each week is a spelling test. The first day of each will feature workbook activities that will require students to write each word at least once. The main objective is for students to become familiar with the words and the spelling patterns.

Students do a variety of activities that emphasize words in and out of context and various forms of words, such as with added suffixes and prefixes. The spelling list still includes a phonics concept but is applied to more complex words. Some lists may highlight different ways to spell the same sound or different ways similar spelling patterns are decoded.

The back cover features the Butterfly Spelling Game. Directions are inside the workbook and in the Teacher's Manual. A printable copy can be found in the Resource Center on this website.

The Third Grade Writing Skills Workbook further develops the writing skills lessons presented in the curriculum, adds additional activities, and aligns with national standards. Many pages include spelling or vocabulary word lists. This is to encourage students to use words they are using in other parts of the curriculum.

The format of the Third Grade Reading Books changes from the previous levels. Rather than individual weekly books, stories have been combined into two volumes. Reading assignments use all original stories from McRuffy Press. The stories introduce third graders to the world of chapter books. Instead of reading a story several times in a week, students read several different chapters in a week.

The books feature a variety of stories. Characters from previous levels are featured in the books as well as many new ones. From the off-the-wall humor of the Bobcat Cowboys to a historical fiction story about the Underground Railroad, students will discover just how much fun reading can be. They’ll share in the adventures of a homeschooled family that opens a cafe’ and a silly goose named Rufus who solves the mystery of the missing swan, plus many other stories.

 Christian vs. Public School Versions

The only differences between the Christian and Public School versions are found in the first reading book. Stories were edited in the Christian version to remove religious instruction for the Public School version. All other materials in the curriculum are acceptable for Christian or Public School use. Homeschoolers who do not want a Christian version should select the Public School version.
