Why Fractions Are So Hard
Fractions break several "rules" kids have learned about numbers:
- A bigger number on the bottom (denominator) means a smaller piece — counterintuitive!
- 1/2 and 2/4 look different but are equal — confusing for kids used to one right answer
- You can't just add the top and bottom numbers together (1/2 + 1/2 ≠ 2/4)
These conceptual hurdles are real, and rushing past them leads to the procedural errors that haunt kids through middle school.
Start With Concrete Models
Before fractions ever appear on paper, kids need to experience them physically. Use:
- Fraction circles or bars — visual and tactile, great for comparing fractions
- Food — cutting a sandwich or pizza into equal parts is a powerful real-world model
- Folding paper — folding a piece of paper in half, then fourths, shows the relationship between fractions clearly
- Number lines — placing fractions on a number line builds understanding of their value relative to whole numbers
The Right Sequence Matters
Introduce fractions in this order for the smoothest progression:
- Equal parts — What does it mean to divide something equally? (This is the foundation.)
- Unit fractions — 1/2, 1/3, 1/4. One piece of a whole divided into equal parts.
- Non-unit fractions — 2/3, 3/4. Multiple pieces of the same whole.
- Equivalent fractions — Different names for the same amount.
- Comparing fractions — Which is bigger? Use models before rules.
- Adding and subtracting fractions — Same denominator first, then unlike denominators.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Teaching rules before understanding. "Just find a common denominator" means nothing to a child who doesn't understand why denominators matter. Build the concept first.
Moving to abstract too fast. If your child is making errors, go back to the physical model. There's no shame in pulling out the fraction circles in 5th grade.
Not enough review. Fraction concepts build on each other, and gaps compound quickly. A curriculum with built-in spiral review helps ensure earlier concepts stay solid as new ones are introduced.
Making Fractions Stick
A few strategies that help fractions move from short-term to long-term memory:
- Connect fractions to things your child already knows (half a dollar, quarter past the hour)

- Celebrate small wins — fractions are genuinely hard, and progress deserves recognition
